Diapause

Diapause refers to a state of suspended animation. This is also called anhydrobiosis. Animals in diapause can withstand both high and low temperatures. Some rotifer eggs can be frozen to -1o Kelvin for a short period of time. Whether we are talking about a diapause egg or organism, there is no metabolic activity occurring so there is no danger of running out of energy, at least for a while. Further, there is no water being produced so there is no danger of tissue damage either.
