Oceans and Air
Oceans help stabilize the
concentrations of carbon dioxide and oxygen in our atmosphere.
Unfortunately, we produce so much carbon dioxide that the oceans
can't keep up. And we pollute our oceans, kill the beneficial algae,
and retard the production of oxygen through
photosynthesis.
- If carbon dioxide reacts with water and forms
an acid, why is the pH of the ocean between 8.1 and 8.3
units?
- If the water floating as ice in the ocean
melted because of global warming, what would happen to
Florida?
- If the water existing on land as glacial ice
melted because of global warming, what would happen to southern
Texas?
- How does the oxygen content of sea water
compare with that of freshwater?
- Which sea water has the most oxygen - one at
5oC or one at 25oC? Defend your
answer.
- How does the primary
productivity of oceans compare to other
ecosystems?
